Candle Safety Instructions
Candle Safety Instructions
Candles are powerful tools for rituals, intentions, and spiritual work, but they must be used responsibly. Please follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and meaningful experience.
General Candle Safety
Before Lighting Your Candle
- Trim the wick to 5mm (¼ inch) before each use to prevent excessive flame, soot, and uneven burning.
- Place the candle on a fireproof surface, such as a ceramic plate or heat-resistant surface.
- Keep away from flammable objects (curtains, paper, herbs, fabrics) and out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid drafts, open windows, and air vents, as they may cause uneven burning or excessive flickering.
While Burning Your Candle
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Allow the wax to fully melt across the surface (especially for container candles) to prevent tunneling.
- Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time to prevent overheating.
- Never move a burning candle, as the container and wax can become extremely hot.
Extinguishing Your Candle
- Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame to avoid wax splatter.
- Do not use water to extinguish the flame—it can cause hot wax to splatter and may break glass containers.
- Ensure the wick is upright and centered after extinguishing to prepare for the next use.
Special Safety Notes for Ritual & Intention Candles
Ritual & Spell Candles
- If your practice requires letting a candle burn completely, ensure it is placed in a fireproof bowl or cauldron with a layer of sand or salt to catch dripping wax.
- Never leave an anointed or dressed candle (oils/herbs) burning unattended, as these elements can catch fire unpredictably.
Herbal & Crystal-Infused Candles
- Be mindful of herbs, flowers, and crystals embedded in the wax—they can catch fire or shift as the wax melts.
- If an herb or crystal moves toward the wick and causes a large flame, extinguish the candle immediately and trim the wick before relighting.
Intention Candles & Manifestation Practices
- When carving symbols, names, or affirmations into the wax, ensure the candle remains structurally stable and does not weaken.
- If using multiple candles for a ritual, space them far enough apart to avoid wax pooling together, which can create a fire hazard.
Wax Melt Burner Safety
Wax melt burners offer a flame-free way to enjoy fragrance and rituals, but they still require careful handling.
Using Your Wax Melt Burner Safely
- Only use a wax melt burner designed for wax melts. Do not use oil burners or other devices that are not intended for wax melts.
- Use an unscented tealight candle (for tealight burners) and ensure it sits properly underneath the burner dish.
- Do not overfill the burner. Only place 1-2 wax melt cubes or an appropriate amount of wax in the dish.
- Ensure good ventilation. Avoid using wax melts in small, enclosed spaces without airflow.
While the Burner is in Use
- Never leave a wax melt burner unattended while in use.
- Keep the burner on a heat-resistant surface away from flammable objects, pets, and children.
- Do not move the burner while the wax is still liquid, as hot wax can cause burns.
Removing & Replacing Wax Melts
Wait until the wax is fully cooled before attempting to remove it.
- To remove hardened wax, we suggest letting the wax harden completely, lighting a new tealight underneath it allowing the heat to warm up the burner for less than 2 minutes. you should be able to scoop out the used wax from the burner without any problems.
- Never use sharp objects to remove wax, as this may damage the burner.
- Always wipe the dish clean before adding new wax melts to avoid mixing scents and residue buildup.
When to Stop Burning Your Candle
- Discontinue use when only 1cm (½ inch) of wax remains to prevent overheating and possible glass breakage.
- If the flame flickers excessively, produces black smoke, or becomes too high, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.
Final Reminder
- Fire safety should always come first. No intention, spell, or ritual is worth the risk of a fire hazard. When in doubt, use flameless alternatives such as LED candles or written affirmations.
By following these guidelines, you can safely incorporate candles into your spiritual practice and rituals.
